Joanna's Place

Vision
To enable children and their families to be resilient through unexpected changes in life

Mission
Provide children support and constructive ways to deal with life’s unexpected and stressful changes – encouraging resilience, strength, and sensitivity and preventing problems that can arise when feelings are denied or remain unresolved.

Provide parents and families the skills necessary to help children at each age and stage of their development.

Organization overview
In August of 2007 Heather and Jerry Mullin heard the news that no parent should ever have to hear…their beautiful, sweet and bright daughter, Joanna, had been killed at the tender age of 6. Such devastating loss in unfathomable to most of us, and it is difficult to imagine how a family could survive such a tragedy.

The harsh reality is that everyone faces many losses during the course of their everyday lives. Consider these numbers: every fifteen minutes, a baby dies; every four hours, an adolescent takes his or her life by suicide; every day, 13 children are victims of homicide; every day 190 adults die in accidents.

Joanna’s Place was founded in the loving and caring memory of Joanna Mullin. The organization is a young 501(c)(3) working to raise $500,000 by 2012 to provide support to families who are suffering a significant loss or change. It is the goal of Joanna’s place to provide services to families for a minimal donation of $20 so that everyone has access to the support they need, when they need it most.

Joanna’s place will provide support to families through three primary offerings:

1) Consultations – Advice for parents when they need it most. Adults learn to talk about something that is hard or unmentionable with their children. For example, when a loved one is facing a life threatening illness, or Mom had a miscarriage, or Dad is going to fight in a war.

2) Support Groups – For families when a parent or sibling has died, for young widows/widowers, for children whose sibling has a special need, etc.

3) Resources & referrals – To be sure families have the tools they need to move ahead
